The future of the industry - part 3

I recently sat down with Peppercom intern Kaitlin Tierney to get her thoughts on the field of PR and how it's portrayed on the big and little screen.

I recently sat down with Peppercom intern Kaitlin Tierney to get her thoughts on the field of PR and how it's portrayed on the big and little screen.

Cody: What do you think of the way Hollywood portrays PR people?

Tierney: A Hollywood PR professional is the witty, slick, good-looking person who promises her clients a lot and has more fun than I could ever imagine. I guess Samantha Jones from "Sex and the City" is the reason I went into PR. I hope one day to have a career as perfect as hers.

Cody: What are your feelings about the reality TV shows that feature PR firms?

Tierney: After watching "Kell on Earth," I realized I never wanted to work in fashion PR or have a boss who made me cry. That said, Kelly Cutrone is an amazing PR professional who has made herself into a well-respected brand in the industry. But, don't even get me started on the event planning company called Command PR on E!'s "The Spin Crowd." They call themselves a PR firm, but I've yet to see them do anything but plan or attend an event.

Cody: Do your parents understand what you do for a living? My dad still doesn't get it.

Tierney: It would be an exaggeration to say my parents understand what I do. My dad thinks I'm doing a combination of advertising, marketing, and PR. My mom thinks journalism and PR are the same with the only difference being one writes a lot in journalism and talks a lot in PR.

Steve Cody is cofounder and managing partner at Peppercom.
