CHICAGO, IL: Flowers Communications Group, an independent multicultural firm, named Rashada Whitehead president. Whitehead rejoined the agency in 2008 as SVP and its first appointed MD. She initially joined the firm in 2000, as an assistant account executive.

She will take on the numerous responsibilities held by D. Michelle Flowers Welch, who as part of the announcement will assume the title of founder and CEO, having previously been in the role of president and CEO. Whitehead confirmed that the firm will not replace the MD position, but it plans to expand the leadership team at the VP level.

She said that the promotion had been part of a long-term agency growth plan, adding that the firm currently has interest in expanding its business in the consumer, health and beauty, and women-focused categories. New business goals also include education and lifestyle and entertainment.

"We've been experiencing growth [from] partnerships; we're getting new business that way," she said.

Regarding timing of the news, on the eve of the firm's 20th anniversary, she added, "You just know when it's the right time."
