WASHINGTON: The Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) named Dori Salcido deputy assistant secretary for public affairs, following the departure earlier this year of Jenny Backus.

Richard Sorian, assistant secretary for public affairs at HHS, made the announcement internally on February 25.

Salcido, most recently a communications director at the HHS Office of the Assistant Secretary for Health and the Office of the Surgeon General, started February 22. She previously worked at AOL and in the White House press office.

Salcido replaces Backus.

She works closely with Chris Stenrud and Luis Rosero, both deputy assistant secretaries for public affairs, and is responsible for public health issues.

Stenrud is leading the office's communications on the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act and healthcare financing. Rosero leads the office's public affairs efforts relating to human services issues, Recovery Act programs, and specialty media outreach.

Salcido, Stenrud, and Rosero report to Sorian.
