WASHINGTON: Safe Kids USA has launched an awareness campaign, funded by founding sponsor Johnson & Johnson, aimed at helping coaches and parents protect young people from sports injuries.

Safe Kids USA will host more than 100 sports safety clinics nationwide between now and the end of summer, as well as a free webcast on May 2 which will address such issues as concussions, and the importance of hydration and pre-physical examinations. The webcast features four safety experts, including former NFL star Steve Young.

Susan Garavaglia, a communications consultant for Safe Kids USA, said both initiatives are being promoted through a media relations strategy that includes a partnership with about 20 mommy and daddy bloggers.

“It's a key part to help us get the word out about the campaign as well as the webcast,” she said.

In addition to reaching out to health and family-oriented websites, Garavaglia said they also targeted national media. Safe Kids USA has provided B-roll featuring three of the webcast experts to national and local TV broadcasters. Edelman is assisting with the media outreach, Garavaglia said, while Strauss Radio Strategies helped execute a national radio tour.

Safe Kids USA is also using Facebook and Twitter to support the effort.
