CHICAGO: Daily deals website Groupon has swooped on Amazon to recruit its new SVP of global marketing, Rich Williams.

Williams started at the Chicago-based coupon phenomenon yesterday and is part of a ramping up of the senior management team at Groupon to cope with its exponential growth.

He was previously part of the worldwide marketing and advertising team at Amazon, working in search engine marketing and optimization, marketing partnerships, offline advertising, brand management, and research.

Williams is taking over the role formerly held by Aaron Cooper, who has moved to become SVP of revenue management, overseeing the site's national partners and deals with vendors.

Groupon also recently hired Bradford Williams as VP of global communications. The former VP of corporate communications at Yahoo previously held corporate comms roles at VeriSign and Alibaba.com. He also started at Groupon yesterday.

Groupon now employs 8,000 people worldwide, with 2,000 based in Chicago.
