PALO ALTO, CA: Facing a level of scrutiny and intense coverage akin to the pressure in a political campaign, Facebook hired Joe Lockhart, former press secretary in the Clinton White House, as VP of global communications.
The social media giant hopes Lockhart will bring his familiarity with fast-paced reporting and the need for thoughtful communications under pressure into the role — skills he developed while serving as press secretary and chief communication strategist during President Bill Clinton's second term.
Lockhart officially joins Facebook on July 15 and will manage the social networking company's corporate, policy, and international communications teams. He starts his role in Washington, where he currently lives, and will relocate to California when family commitments allow.
Lockhart will report to Elliot Schrage, the company's VP of global communications, marketing, and public policy, and work parallel to Marne Levine, VP of global public policy.
“From a tiny group three years ago we now have a truly global communications team led by strong and experienced professionals,” Andrew Noyes, manager of public policy communications at Facebook, said in an e-mail.
Most recently, Lockhart worked as managing director at Glover Park Group, a Washington and New York-based communications firm he co-founded in 2001, where he worked with a range of clients, including JPMorgan Chase, Yahoo, Visa, and Microsoft. His prior experience includes serving as EVP at consulting firm Bozell Sawyer Miller, and as a broadcast journalist at NBC News, CNN, and Sky Television of London.
Facebook also recently bolstered its policy team with two new hires to its Washington policy team.
