Panetta appoints key public affairs staffers

WASHINGTON: Defense Secretary Leon Panetta has appointed George Little and Capt. John Kirby to senior Defense Dept. public affairs positions.

WASHINGTON: Defense Secretary Leon Panetta has appointed George Little and Capt. John Kirby to senior Defense Dept. public affairs positions.

Little takes the role of deputy assistant secretary of defense/press secretary at the Pentagon, effective immediately. He previously served as director of public affairs during Panetta's tenure as CIA director. Prior to that, he worked on strategy development at the National Counterterrorism Center and served as an intelligence community and business consultant with Booz Allen Hamilton and IBM.

Kirby will transition to deputy assistant secretary of defense/spokesman and director of media operations in August. He is currently spokesman and senior communications strategist for public affairs for Adm. Michael Mullen, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.
