The 40 Under 40 list is one of PRWeek's most popular initiatives, earmarking as it does the future stars of our industry - or, as is increasingly the case, young professionals who have already made it to very senior levels in their organizations.

Entries vying for a place this year were at the highest level ever, with 260 hopefuls submitted by appreciative nominators. I know I alluded to this last year, but this time it really was literally impossible to narrow down the list to 40 without leaving out some exceptional candidates, such was the quality.

The final nominees comprise significant representation from in-house and agency communicators alike, crossing many different industries and disciplines. As you would expect, digital and social media expertise is well represented.

This year, the 40 Under 40 list is an integral part of the PRWeek NEXT Conference, which takes place at The TimesCenter in New York City on November 8 and 9. A lunch honoring the 40 will open the event. I hope to see many nominees, supporters, and delegates to celebrate the excellence of PR's next generation.

HP's CCO Bill Wohl is one senior communicator who has had to utilize all his skills and experience to navigate a difficult and transitional year at the tech behemoth. This month's Newsmaker followed HP's new CEO Leo Apotheker from SAP and is grateful to have the support of, and a direct line into, the top executive as communications takes its place at the center of the rebuilding process.

Our 40 Under 40 honorees demonstrate that the new generation is increasingly afforded the same luxury as the import of strategic PR counsel is recognized.
