PURCHASE, NY: PepsiCo and the PepsiCo Foundation have partnered with the United Nations World Food Programme and United States Agency for International Development to promote better nutrition in Ethiopia.
The organizations designed the Enterprise EthioPEA initiative to increase the production of chickpeas in the country through a variety of methods, such as educating Ethiopian farmers on modern agricultural techniques. Chickpeas were chosen for this project because they are full of protein and reduce the risk of heart disease and diabetes. Ethiopia also produces more chickpeas than any other country in Africa.
PepsiCo has said it hopes to use chickpeas in a significant portion of its products by 2020 as part of its goal to develop a $30 billion global nutrition business.
