For the last four years, Edelman New York has organized a drive to collect simple, everyday items to help bring a little bit of home to our troops serving overseas and away from their families this holiday season. All care package recipients are family or friends of New York office employees.
The firm has sent more than 60 packages of snacks, books, soups, handheld games, and other items to the men and women of the Army, Navy, Department of Defense, and the Marine Corps. While the majority of packages are sent to those serving in Iraq and Afghanistan, we also include those who can't come home for the holidays because of non-combat deployments as well.
Several of our clients have also kindly contributed to this effort, providing body wash, magazines, sun block, coffee, tea, and other drink mixes.
The drive isn't limited to employees. Many Edelman New Yorkers get their families involved as well by planning shopping trips over the weekend to pick things up for the troops together or going through old books and magazines for donation. One colleague has gotten his childrens' teachers and classmates involved. Each year one of our service members receives a handwritten note, picture, even a hand-knit hat, from the kids at The Unquowa School in Connecticut.
The notes of thanks we receive every year from care-package recipients make it all worthwhile. One soldier stationed in Afghanistan said, “Thanks for keeping up with us in this desolate place.” Another said, “I can't tell you how much my men and women enjoyed the little pieces of home they found inside those boxes. It is the support of women such as yourself and your fellow co-workers that remind us who we're fighting for.”
Edelman is proud to support the men and women of our armed services.
