MINNEAPOLIS: PRWeek has learned that Target Corp. is seeking an African-American agency of record.
A Target spokeswoman said she didn't have "any information on that. But even if I did, I wouldn't be able to confirm or deny it because it would be considered proprietary."
However, has been told by as many as three independent sources that the retailer is engaged in a search.
Bob Lepre, principal and head of the retail practice group at the New England Consulting Group, a marketing consultancy that has worked with other retailers, said this is another example of Target being two steps ahead of everyone else in its space.
"It may actually be more than just two steps," Lepre said. "I don't think there are many PR efforts from other major retailers targeting African Americans. Competitively, this is going to be an advantage to them."
Target plans a Black History Month initiative in February, as well as a partnership with singer Mary J. Blige.
