LOS ANGELES: She's starred in rock videos, launched clothing lines, and even run for president. Now, Mattel's doll-about-town Barbie is making her stage debut in Barbie Live In Fairytopia, an 80-city touring production set to open April 1 in Columbus, OH.
Publicity for the show, crafted by LA-based Tellem Worldwide, includes local and national media outreach designed to generate brand awareness among preteen girls and their families, said John Tellem, head of the independent firm's entertainment practice.
In addition to arranging newspaper interviews, morning show appearances, and hospital visits by Fairytopia's Barbie, Tellem is hosting events and script read-alongs meant to introduce young audiences to live theater, Tellem said.
Inspired by 2005's direct-to-video Barbie Fairytopia, the musical features flying fairies, pixies, and "lots of Broadway elements," Tellem explained. Bringing Barbie to the stage was "a natural progression," he added.
The show is scheduled to run through September.
