Simply put, there's too much demand and not enough supply. In the present environment, agencies have to be creative in their approach to attracting top talent. There are plenty of smart, capable PR people in the industry; it's a matter of finding them.
Firms must analyze their needs and determine what specific qualities potential candidates should possess in order to fill open posts. Don't panic hire, wait for the right candidate. In the long run, that decision will serve the needs of both the agency and its clients far better. And make sure the candidate is someone you envision staying with the firm long-term, not someone you bring on board while "triage hiring."
Another challenge is how to make the move as attractive as possible. From a career-development standpoint, we need to make sure that team members are always challenged and continually sharpening their skills.
