WHITE PLAINS, NY: Thomas Martin, SVP of corporate relations for ITT, has announced he will retire at year's end, completing a ten-year tenure at the company.
Martin had also served on ITT's executive council and handled worldwide brand and reputation management, public relations, employee communications, government affairs, corporate advertising, and community relations. He also led a recent rebranding for ITT. He said the culmination of that campaign would be an opportune time to step down. The search process for his successor is underway.
"I'm celebrating my tenth year with the company and have a growing desire to teach," Martin said. "I wanted to make that [decision] at a time where I could help recruit a successor and leave the company in good shape."
Martin is contemplating teaching, writing, and nonprofit opportunities in his post-corporate life. He has expressed an interest to teach on an adjunct level at the College of Charleston, where he serves as vice chairman of the advisory council to the communication department (along with PRWeek Editor in Chief Julia Hood).
Martin said that his company has made great strides in its last ten years.
"We have given ITT a real face and voice and unified the corporate brand," Martin said. "We were formerly just a collection of business; we're a more unified company and project that image to the world."
Before joining ITT in 1996, he spent 18 years at FedEx, ascending to the title of chief communications officer in 1995.
