Toyota shook up the US auto sales market last week when its 2006 US sales numbers drove DaimlerChrysler into the fourth spot. It marked Toyota's best year ever and the first time in history that it landed in one of the top three spots, ruining the media's favorite appellation for the auto industry's three (historically) dominant American manufacturers. But don't expect Toyota to sit at number three for long. With 2,220,090 vehicles sold last year, Toyota was only 212,996 vehicles behind top seller Ford. The top spot is now clearly in Toyota's sights and the big three may all soon be in its rear-view mirror.
