Recently, I did a story about the New Orleans Convention and Visitors Bureau (NOMCVB) and their selection of WS to head up the efforts to drive tourism back to the city. One of the issues that Kelly Schulz, the VP of communications and PR for the organization, mentioned during the course of the reporting was the bad press that the city was getting and the need to counter that.
So I immediately took an interest in this story, which appeared today on Yahoo! News. It occurred to me that, for all the work that the NOMCVB is doing to convince outsiders that New Orleans is a great place to be, it seems the powers that be have yet to convince the city’s residents of the same thing.
All of the tourism PR in the world isn’t going to counter the negative message as long as that message rings true to the people who live there.
