Google has formed a political ad sales team, working in overdrive on getting some of those online election campaign dollars from the candidates and their teams. LAT has a good story on its efforts.
At first, I thought this obviously made sense for Google, but I wasn't so sure about the candidates. But, after reflection, it became obvious that not even the best of SEO firms will be able to get a politician's Web site high up on all of the buzz topics (that have been written about for years) like healthcare, economy, values, etc. So why not overspend to have your 08.com at the top of the paid links on the right.
You may not often click on the right-hand-side ads, but politicians are probably hoping that independent voters in '08 will be looking for information wherever they can find it.
