Richard Gere and Hindi trucker sex are two things that are naturally related in the minds of most people. So it was predictable that the Buddha-loving star of The Mothman Prophecies would be the man that India sought to educate its hardworking truck drivers about proper condom use.
Unfortunately, Gere decided to plant a few smooches on the cheek of Bollywood star Shilpa Shetty at the AIDS Awareness (for truck drivers!) rally they inexplicably headlined in New Delhi last week.
Indian truckers can apparently tolerate - and even celebrate - aging American actors clumsily chanting "No condom, no sex!" in the local language, but kissing in public was too much for them to stomach. Protests swept the entire nation, with hundreds of thousands coming together to curse the vile display of licentiousness.
Well, let's hope they never see American Gigolo.
This incident made everybody look bad. Gere, who should have known better, came off as an arrogant American ignorant of local customs. Conservative Indians came off as old fashioned and out of touch. And the innocent Shetty came off like a bad, bad girl to her backwards trucker fan base. If she gets drummed out of India, maybe she can star in the sequel to Pretty Woman.
