Gardasil has been one of the most consistent stories in healthcare this year, first with all the positive press Merck could ever hope for, and then the controversy that followed their hard lobbying efforts.

Now a new player is set to enter the fray, with GlaxoSmithKline filing for the FDA approval of Cervarix, potentially giving Gardasil its first competitor. Today's news is that while the vaccine helps prevent the HPV virus, it doesn't help women who already have it. There had been some confusion whether a vaccine could help women who had already contracted the virus, but this study from the National Cancer Institute seems to put that somewhat to rest.
