Hey, sports fans, baseball god (in the Baltimore-Washington area anyway) Cal Ripken Jr. has been named a “special sports envoy” for the State Department.

While naming the former Oriole a goodwill ambassador won’t solve any problems in the Middle East, the State Department couldn’t have picked a better representative of the sport to “reach out to young people around the world,” as his job as envoy is described by under secretary for public diplomacy and public affairs Karen Hughes.

First up in his new job will be a trip in October to China, where he will put on clinics for Chinese baseball coaches, in keeping with similar work he’s done in the US since his retirement at the Ripken Academy in Aberdeen, MD.
