In Chrysler's bid to turn things around it is looking to Toyota, the world's top automaker, for help...sort of. Chrysler has hired away Jim Press, Toyota's top North American executive, to run its sales and marketing operations as Chrysler's vice chairman and president. . Press was formerly president and COO of Toyota North America and the first non-Japanese member of the Japanese automaker's board of directors.
Press will work alongside newly appointed chairman and CEO Robert Nardelli, and Tom LaSorda, vice chairman and president, as part of Chrysler's top management team. The AP reports that "LaSorda will run the company's manufacturing and purchasing operations, while Press will handle sales, marketing and product strategy, said company spokesman Mike Aberlich."
This marks the second major executive announcement for Chrysler since August when private equity firm Cerberus Capital Management LP assumed control of the company and named former Home Depot head Nardelli the new chairman and CEO.
We covered the sale of Chrysler and the recent launch of the Voices of Chrysler, its public facing blog.
