After months of speculation, Yahoo is officially trying its hand at social networking again. The search engine has quietly launched Mash, a site that bears a striking resemblance to Facebook. Mash's stark profile page begs users to start uploading modules. And there is no shortage of these -- you can add a trendy ego boosting module, or even Karl Marx paddleball to your profile. Yahoo is promising, like Facebook, to eventually open its modules to 3rd party developers.
But there are some obvious differences. In the true wiki spirit of Web 2.0, Mash users can edit each other's profiles. Also there is no search function, but considering this is Yahoo, that can't be far off.
Right now Mash is invitation-only, but the site encourages users to invite their entire address book -- so it's clearly going mainstream. And sure, Mash could appeal to a new generation of Web users, and perhaps, lure others back to the search engine. But with so many specialized networks that cater to just about every market niche imaginable, I'm wondering if the social media sphere is hitting some kind of saturation point.
I'd like to hear from you: is there social media fatigue or is the public just hungry for more?
