NBC has reportedly tapped pro wrestler Hulk Hogan to host its remake of American Gladiators. While some people may question NBC’s move to bring back the early ’90s show, the strategy behind the revival seems like a solid attempt to bring back the best of the old in a format updated for a new generation.

Hogan, who definitely offers a nostalgic tie to the past, has in the past couple of years re-emerged in the spotlight with the success of his VH1 reality show, Hogan Knows Best.

While NBC is currently holding open casting calls for both gladiators and contestants, TVWeek reports that the show’s producers are in talks with “professional and retired athletes from various disciplines, particularly ultimate fighting, to play the show's brigade of gladiators.” Having recognizable names in the cast of gladiators, unlike the original series – unless you count Nitro – is a move that no doubt will help draw a bigger audience.

Add that to the new show’s updated stunts, focus on contestants’ backstories, and a twist that will document participants actually training for their appearances, and you’ve got a lot of potential.
