The face of American Idol and voice behind American Top 40, Ryan Seacrest, will join Comcast CEO Brian L. Roberts on stage at the Vegas' Consumer Electronics Show today to help introduce the nation's largest cable company's newest endeavor: making a giant library of movies and television shows available on-demand through television or downloadable through the Internet, according to The New York Times.
The Business Section reports that after a keynote address explaining Project Infinity, the name of the effort to put 6,000 titles in the hands of customers, Seacrest and Roberts will introduce wideband, a new technology that allows for quicker downloads, by downloading “Batman Begins,” in about four minutes, instead of six hours, the usual time required by a standard broadband connection. Comcast aims to provide wideband to all its customers, but will test it in certain markets for 2008.
The company also unveils Fancast.com today, a site on which devotees of CSI, Tila Tequila and Katherine Heigl can view 3,000 hours of shows from CBS, MTV and ABC, among others, at no cost.
In a move he says will strengthen marketing and advertising, Condé Nast President and CEO Charles H. Townsend fired a number of executives yesterday, including group publisher and former rising star, Mitchell B. Fox, Sandy Golinkin, the publisher of Lucky and Amy Churgin, a SVP and former publisher of Gourmet and Architectural Digest. According to The New York Times, the company put in place executives seen having greater strengths in those areas.
Microsoft's MSN Latino, a Spanish-language website will present advertisers with a way to reach second-generation Hispanics with a service providing spots in mostly English, according to the Wall Street Journal. The move marks a departure from its heavy Spanish advertising, which the company and its partner, Interpublic-owned MRM Worldwide, say is too one dimensional, as second-generation Hispanics – one of the fastest-growing consumer sectors – largely speak both languages.
Following a trend started in 2004 with John Kerry, presidential candidate Mitt Romney has been “swift-boated” by a book about how his affiliation with the Church of Jesus Christ and LDS will affect his presidency. The book, “Mitt, Set Our People Free,” published by Revelation Press and written by former fraternity brother Mike Moody, claims Romney's “sacred” oath to the Mormon faith requires him to “use his control of the United States to set up a world-wide theocracy, one based on the clearly unorthodox beliefs of the Church of Latter Day Saints.”
