Despite grassroots communications that initially saved the show, the CBS fan favorite Jericho is being cancelled.
The first season ended abruptly, which prompted dedicated viewers to send CBS tens of thousands of peanuts. The campaign, inspired by a Jericho plotline, was intended to persuade the network to save the show.
At the time, Chris Ender, CBS SVP of communications, told PRWeek that the campaign helped the network rethink the show's cancellation.
“Without question, there are passionate viewers watching this program; we simply wish there were more,” CBS said, in a statement to Reuters. “We thank an engaged and spirited fan base for keeping the show alive this long. We have no regrets bringing the show back for a second try. We listened to our viewers, gave the series an opportunity to grow, and the producers put a great story on the screen. We're proud of everyone's efforts.”
According to Reuters, the protest that saved Jericho last year “has been called the largest fan effort ever to try and halt a network cancellation of a series. “
Despite poor ratings, The Hollywood Reporter adds that Jericho performed well with online views and iTunes downloads as well. In a recent interview, Carol Barbee, executive producer, said “Jericho is unique because the fans saved it – watching it on the Internet and streaming and iTunes downloads, all those things that are not being counted. That's what Jericho will be known for.”
