Established fashion brands – and, I’m sure, other industry brands with a consumer following - can enjoy “free advertising” on Facebook thanks to its open platform. Fashionista calls the capability the “Achilles Heel of Facebook,” highlighting a Louis Vuitton application that enables users to send Louis Vuitton “gifts” to friends. The more "gifts" you send, the more LV images appear on participating friends’ profiles. Also, the more you send, the more new "merchandise" you're allowed to preview.

Facebook can thank its open platform for exponential growth and success, but the site might forfeit a few ad dollars to PR execs who come up with such ideas for applications and the nerds hired to create them.
