Skeptics on the political far right often claim that presumptive Republican nominee Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) doesn’t have much of a base, after alienating conservatives with his support for campaign finance reform and votes against President Bush’s tax cuts.

Yet others have claimed that the Arizona senator’s only real base is the media. If that’s true, he threw his staunchest supporters some red meat on Monday by telling the annual meeting of the Associated Press that he would support the Federal Shield Law in the US Senate.

McCain also gave the press – known to call on organizations of all sorts to be more transparent – to take some of its own medicine, saying, “The workings of America’s newsrooms are some of the least transparent. I think it is an impression that the press should work on correcting.”
