PALO ALTO, CA: Facebook hired Elliot Schrage, former VP of global communications and public affairs at Google, as its new VP of comms and public policy, according to OutCast Communications, which represents the social networking site. Rachel Whetstone will succeed Schrage at Google, according to a spokesperson there. Google commented to PRWeek on the departure that, "Elliot was a valued member of the Google team, and we wish him well in his new endeavors. We have a deep management bench at Google and are delighted that Rachel Whetstone, who has been such an important part of Google's international communications successes, has agreed to head Global Communications and Public Affairs." BoomTown, a Wall Street Journal blog, broke the story last night saying that Schrage confirmed the move via a Facebook chat. Silicon Valley tech blog Valley Wag had previously reported that sources believed Schrage had interviewed with Facebook, possibly brought in by his former Google boss, Sheryl Sandberg, now COO at Facebook.
