PALO ALTO, CA: Facebook hired Elliot Schrage, former VP of global communications and public affairs at Google, as its new VP of communications and public policy.
PRWeek obtained an excerpt of an e-mail that Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg sent to staff about the new hire. Zuckerberg stated, "Elliot Schrage will be joining our management team... He will be responsible for developing the key messages we want people to understand about our products, our business, and the growing global importance of social networking and what we do."
The e-mail indicated that Schrage will help steer global communications strategy and internal comms.
"Elliot will direct our efforts to work with users, media, governments, and other entities around the world to ensure that Facebook's policies are transparent. Elliot's role will be critical to helping us scale based on our culture that values transparency, openness, and honest internal communications," Zuckerberg wrote.
Andrew Pederson, a Google spokesman, told PRWeek, via e-mail, "[Schrage] was a valued member of the Google team, and we wish him well in his new endeavors." Rachel Whetstone, formerly Google's European director of communications and public affairs, will take over Schrage's role at Google.
Schrage is Facebook's second high-profile hire from Google in recent months. In March, Facebook hired Sheryl Sandberg, former VP of global online sales and operations at Google, as COO.
