Tomato growers, food retailers, and restaurants are watching and waiting as the FDA and CDC work to uncover the source of a salmonella outbreak that has hit the global tomato industry in the last two weeks.

Until the source is identified, it seems that PR efforts are focusing on providing the basic facts - what varieties and regions have been cleared - to media outlets and industry associations.

“It’s starting to morph,” said Julia Stewart, PR director for the Produce Marketing Association, earlier this week. “We’re just starting to talk about consumer outreach but, even yesterday, there were way more questions than answers.”

Some trade organizations are reporting an estimated loss of $500 million from the recall.
