As Belgium-based InBev made its desire to acquire Anheuser-Busch official after weeks of speculation, a patriotic-inspired campaign seems determined to stop it.

"The heartland of America doesn't take to foreign ownership easily," Scott Goodson, founder and chief executive of StrawberryFrog, a branding firm in New York told Business Week.

Two Web sites to "save Bud" from foreign takeover recently appeared: SaveBudweiser.com and SaveAB.com.

On Save Budweiser, the site pleas for visitors to sign their petition to save the American brew, saying, " Let’s band together as one voice and try to save more than just our beer. We don’t want another American icon turned over to a foreign company; we want the motto to remain…The Great American Lager."

Even politicians are getting into the protest act.

More to come on this, as Anheuser-Busch chats up Mexico's Modelo as an alternative.
