WEST HOLLYWOOD, CA: Equality for All, the coalition of civil rights organizations, GLBT groups, and voters, hired WPP Group agencies Ogilvy PR and Dewey Square Group to handle media relations and campaign consulting as the organization attempts to defeat the initiative that would amend the California Constitution to forbid the recognition of same-sex marriages.

"This is a major statewide campaign, and as is the usual case, we've hired some political professionals to help us with strategy," said Dale Kelly Bankhead, campaign manager for Equality for All. "Marriage, of course, is a fundamental freedom and people have very strong feelings about those freedoms and we're going into tap into those very strong feelings."

Steve Smith of DSG will serve as lead campaign consultant and was chosen because of his past campaign experience, including work that aided the defeat of the abortion-parental-notification initiative in California in 2005 and 2006. Smith, who often works with Maggie Linden of Ogilvy's Sacramento office, was chosen after a formal selection process and, "part of that decision was based on the fact that he would bring Ogilvy to the table with him," Bankhead said.
