Last night, Chandler Chicco Agency hosted a media panel for staff and pharmaceutical clients at its offices in New York about the emerging role of social media in healthcare. The overall consensus? There wasn't one.

The panelists -- BusinessWeek's Catherine Arnst, Reuters Health reporter Karla Gale, Scientific American's Christie Nicholson, Doctor Radio's Dr. Marc Siegel, and Pharmalot blogger Ed Silverman -- discussed their individual roles in media messaging as well as varying viewpoints about the integrated roles of doctors, patients, PR professionals, and the Web.

The takeaway for the PR industry is that press releases are still valid, as long as it has a good headline, a succinct summary, and peaks a reporter's attention, said Gale.

As for pharma's reluctance to pursue social media, Silverman said: "The bad thing is the longer the walls are up, the longer the companies are disconnected from the people they're trying to reach ... The public will get that information somehow."
