PRWeek: How did you get involved in both Mediabistro.com and FishbowlNY? Where were you before that?

Rebecca L. Fox:
I had Mediabistro.com on my mind for a long time before working here. When I was at graduate school for journalism at NYU, I focused on media on media and wound up doing the bulk of my work on business stories about the media. Immediately after I graduated, I was very aware of Mediabistro.com being a great destination for me professionally, however they didn't have any openings at the time so I wound up taking a job as a Web and copy editor at a trade magazine called National Jeweler….I came in as features editor in May of 2006, so I've now been at Mediabistro.com for two years.

PRWeek: What do you think is the most important part of being a media person yourself and then covering media? Is it that you have to be a media buff?

Fox:
I think being a media buff is really the best thing you can have going for you. I've always had a really voracious appetite for all kinds of media since I've been very, very young, and I don't get tired of it; I don't burn out and I find the minutiae very interesting. Therefore, I'm thinking about it constantly, not because I have to but because I want to.

PRWeek: What are the tips you could give a PR professional to pitch you?

Fox:
I think at the risk of sounding a very familiar request, like many editors, I think the best thing a PR person can do to approach me in way that makes me want to work with them is to be very cogniscent of the type of content we have. I receive so many pitchers that are so far from what Mediabistro.com tends to cover. A pretty cursory look around the site and blogs can tell you quickly that I'm not typically covering herbal teas…or new toys being released.
