TORONTO: A PR consultant and journalist have teamed up to launch an online tool that connects Canadian PR execs with journalists looking for sources.

The launch was inspired by Peter Shankman's US-based "If I Can Help a Reporter Out (HARO)" tool.

"I am a big fan of HARO, and I wanted to bring the concept to Canada," said Brendan Dermody, a PR consultant who previously worked for Manning Selvage & Lee and High Road Communications, both in Toronto. JournalistSource.ca is a free service, in which PR execs sign up to receive journalist requests for sources up to four times a day.

So far, about 100 PR execs have signed up to JournalistSource.ca since its July 23 debut. Co-founder Greg Majster, a cameraman at Citytv, now aims to build up awareness of the site among journalists. Dermody said he has spoken to HARO founder Peter Shankman about JournalistSource.ca, and each will refer the other when it makes sense to.
