No matter what you call David Blaine – stuntman, magician, or idiot – he merits some respect for being an “endurance artist.” Really, you couldn't hang upside down over Central Park for 60 hours straight. So stop being such a hater.
However, it appears he can't do that either. Folks who have gathered since September 22 to watch Blaine perform this latest feat and possibly go blind were dismayed to find that he's going right-side up for short periods to drink water and take a bathroom break. What the..?!
People have long been intrigued by the enigma that is Blaine. What he's doing makes no sense, but he's doing something you wouldn't. So he has fans, fame, and constant (albeit slightly derisive) media attention. Perhaps for an instant, you may think that if the only reason you're paying attention to Blaine is because he can do crazy stuff for a long time, but he can't even do that, then maybe you'll just keep watching Dancing with the Stars.
But you won't. This feat, like the ones before, builds to a crescendo: a September 24 TV special where he was scheduled to take a 44-foot “dive of death” and, presumably, survive. Even if he cheated a bit, you and your antipathy tune in. That's the real magic of David Blaine.
