MOUNTAIN VIEW, CA: Amid a souring economy, Airfoil PR is growing its tech PR team in Silicon Valley. The agency recently added five people to its account management team, although not at the most senior level posts.
Janet Tyler, president of Airfoil, attributes the growth to new client wins and expansions. Clients like MobiTV, YouSendIt, and Microsoft have kept business steady, she said. The new hires include Adam Silber as account director and four others ranking from account manager to account supervisor. In October it appointed Sue Barnes GM of the Mountain View, CA, office. Previously Tyler had filled that post, but when she moved back to the Detroit office, Airfoil hired Barnes.
“Technology continues to thrive for us, but that doesn't mean it hasn't been difficult,” Tyler said.
The new positions include transferring some people to Silicon Valley from the firm's Detroit hub. Tyler said despite declining business in that region, the firm has avoided layoffs in Detroit by servicing its California-based accounts from that office.
“The leaders and day-to-day people are still in Silicon Valley,” she noted. “With that blend, we've been able to offset the economy here."
The firm's Silicon Valley office employs 10 people and takes in about $1 million in fee billings, she noted. It expects double-digit growth next year by focusing on the mobile, wireless, green, and business intelligent sectors.
“We are placing some bets on those verticals not serving us wrong,” Tyler added.
