East Rutherford, NJ: The MWW Group has launched a brownfield redevelopment practice aimed at helping clients who wish to build on abandoned, often contaminated industrial properties.
The practice is a formalization of a service long offered by the firm. "For many years, MWW has worked with companies and developers in helping to rehabilitate former industrial properties with significant environmental challenges," said EVP Bob Sommer. "They require highly strategic communications plans, as they can face opposition from local residents, elected officials, and environmental lobbyists."
Current brownfield redevelopment clients include EnCap Golf Holdings, and OENJ Cherokee, a major developer of brownfield sites in New Jersey.
According to Bill Murray, head of public affairs at MWW, this area has unique PR challenges. "It's a combination of good-news PR with crisis communications," he said. "In some communities they welcome it, especially if the site has been sitting there forever. In some communities there's a big fight over what to do with it."
