EL SEGUNDO, CA: Bob Marsocci has landed the top job as new VP of corporate communications at Hughes Electronics, replacing George Jamison, who left for a similar position at United Technologies.
Marsocci will also remain senior director of communications for DIRECTV, a subsidiary of Hughes.
The aftermath of the failed merger between Hughes and EchoStar presents Marsocci with an immediate communication challenge. The merger would have created the largest global satellite television company, but the Federal Communications Commission blocked the deal.
"First and foremost, I want to talk about the Hughes and DIRECTV story," explained Marsocci. "We are a vibrant and dynamic company, despite what has been written in the financial and business press that the merger process weakened the company."
Marsocci blamed "a lot of media" for jumping on the Hughes-bashing bandwagon.
"One of the things that the merger precluded was our ability to talk to the press," he said. "From now on, we will be doing this with our president and CEO. The press can't only hear it from me."
