WASHINGTON: The American Meat Institute has hired a veteran trade magazine editor as its new VP of public affairs. Dan Murphy, former editor of Meat Marketing & Technology magazine, will join the AMI April 28.
Murphy has been the editor of three different meat-industry magazines (Meat Marketing & Technology, Meat Processing, and The National Provisioner), and is well known in the meat business. He began covering the industry in 1982.
His experience and knowledge of the industry made him the top candidate for the job, said Janet Riley,SVP of public affairs and professional development for the AMI. "So much of what we do in media relations is media education," she explained. "Dan has a very in-depth knowledge of the industry."
The AMI, a trade group for meat processors, deals with highly technical issues involving food safety, labeling, and nutrition. Murphy's job will be to help educate reporters about key issues facing the meat business.
Murphy has been outspoken in his support of the industry and his disdain for groups like PETA. He will handle media relations and outreach, meeting with editorial boards across the country. He will also oversee writing of daily news items posted to the AMI's website.
