NEW YORK: Last week, TIAA-CREF announced that Steven Goldstein has joined the financial-services company as EVP for public affairs.

Goldstein, who recently advised McKinsey & Co. on the restructuring of its communications group, will oversee marketing, advertising, and corporate communications in the newly created position.

He will also be responsible for TIAA-CREF's relationships with federal and state governments, as well as with educational associations. This is crucial to an organization that manages money for 2.9 million education and research employees at 15,000 institutions.

Goldstein was formerly the chief spokesman for Dow Jones, and was SVP at the Insurance Information Institute.

Goldstein, a Nashville, TN native and a former high school teacher in Tucson, AZ, served in the first Bush administration as director of the public affairs office in the US Department of the Interior. Prior to that, he worked for several members of the House of Representatives.
