NEW YORK: The Lower Manhattan Development Corporation (LMDC) has shuffled its communications personnel, promoting Matthew Higgins, the former VP of communications, to COO and director of communications.
Higgins, who was a press aide in the Giuliani administration, will keep his hand in the daily communications operations, but has handed off chief spokesperson duties to Nancy Poderycki, the outgoing assistant VP for communications.
LMDC is looking to replace her when she leaves next month.
As COO, Higgins is responsible for overseeing the 50-person LMDC staff and assisting in carrying out policies and initiatives. "I'll be taking on more of a management role," he said.
Higgins outlined LMDC's future communications objectives. "Now that we have a site plan in place, our main priority is to fulfill our overriding obligation, which is to create a memorial," he said, adding that a worldwide outreach had generated 10,000 registrations.
"The next step is to figure out how to present the memorial designs to the public in a way that could be easily understood," he said.
The other major priority is determining how to spend the $1.3 billion in funds remaining in the LMDC's coffers. "We're going to launch a large outreach campaign to develop priorities for how the money should be spent in different communities in lower Manhattan," said Higgins.
The LMDC is also planning a $1 million communications campaign featuring kiosks that will chart milestones in the revitalization of the area.
