Washington: Kathleen Harrington, recently departed public affairs director at the Department of Labor (DoL), is joining Porter Novelli's Washington office as SVP of public affairs and director of policy outreach.

Harrington, 51, who was confirmed at DoL just over one year ago, will arrive at PN at the end of this month. The former math and science teacher will provide strategic counsel to clients on public affairs, media relations, healthcare, and other issues.

DoL has named spokeswoman Lisa Kruska acting PA head in Harrington's absence. The department's two most senior posts are now vacant. It's unclear whether Kruska will take over either job permanently.

Before joining DoL, Harrington managed federal, legislative, and public affairs for Aetna. Prior to that she was deputy communications manager for Elizabeth Dole's 2000 Presidential bid. She has also done PA work for the Federal Aviation Administration and the Health Insurance Association of America.

"This gives us an experienced DC public affairs official with strong ties to both ends of Pennsylvania Avenue and to key Washington organizations," said Donna Lucas, PN partner and PA practice leader. "Her vast expertise will benefit a range of current and future clients."

PN created a combined public affairs unit earlier this year, integrating federal, state, and issues specialties of Porter Novelli DC, PN California, and Goddard Claussen Porter Novelli.
