EAST HANOVER, NJ: After 18 years at Bristol-Myers Squibb (BMS), Bob Laverty has joined rival Novartis as VP of global media relations. He will report to SVP Greg Baird, who leads communications for the company's pharmaceutical business.

Laverty's is a new position, which he said was developed to address "a need for better coordination of the great deal of information coming out of the company."

He will work across all therapeutic areas, and coordinate messages to media outlets around the world.

"The challenge is to make sure everything going out has the impact we want it to have," said Laverty.

A pharmacist by training, Laverty spent his first 14 years at BMS handling pharmaceutical media relations. In the last four years of his stint, he also focused on policy issues and

providing people in poor countries with access to medications.
