Meridian, MS: Lockheed Martin had a seven-person crisis communications team on the ground here only hours after an employee killed five fellow workers and himself at a company plant last Tuesday.
Some team members worked 40 hours straight following the tragedy, answering media calls and prepping company execs on key message points, said Sam Grizzle, media relations director for Lockheed Martin Aeronautics Company, the business unit that operates the plant.
Key message points included the company's willingness to work with local law enforcement and its desire to help employees and the community cope, Grizzle said. His team includes specialists in media relations, community and government relations, as well as crisis counselors for employees.
"We've been heads down, answering phone calls as fast as we can," he said. The plant has only 138 employees and is in a small town, so the shooting spree "is particularly devastating to this community," he said.
