NEW YORK: People magazine has hired Nancy Valentino, a former marketing and business-development executive at the auction house Christie's, to fill its top PR post, which had been vacant for the past few months.
Her title is director of communications, a newly created position that yokes together PR and events responsibilities.
"Nancy's extensive experience in both areas made this the ideal time to create this position," a People spokesman said, citing her "broad background in promoting the popular-culture market for Christie's."
In her new post, Valentino enters the fray of the celebrity-journalism world, with competition that includes Us Weekly, InTouch Weekly, and potentially the supermarket tabloids owned by American Media, which just hired Us' Bonnie Fuller as its editorial director.
"People is the chronicle of popular culture," Valentino said. "Its message remains the same."
