FORT WORTH, TX: American Airlines has expanded the duties of its top PR officer and hired a Hewlett-Packard exec to fill the job.

Roger Frizzell, executive director of public relations and communications for HP in Houston, will assume the post of corporate communications and advertising VP at American starting September 29.

American's top PR position had been vacant since March, when former corporate communications VP Tim Doke left to become communications VP at Dell.

Along with the wide range of PR and magazine publishing functions Doke oversaw, Frizzell will be in charge of advertising. Before joining Compaq/HP, Frizzell worked for AT&T and Lucent Technologies.

Gus Whitcomb, who has overseen American's corporate communications since February as acting managing director, will have "acting" dropped from his job title. He will report to Frizzell.

In the press release announcing Frizzell's hiring, American also said it would bring its in-flight products and interactive marketing functions into its marketing department.
