NEW YORK: The American Stock Exchange (Amex) has hired Fred Yager as its new head of communications. As SVP of corporate communications, Yager will report to exchange CEO Salvatore Sodano.

Yager was most recently president and founder of video-news provider World News & Information Network. Before that he was VP of media relations and director of global broadcast services at Merrill Lynch. There he created and was president of Merrill Lynch Television.

Yager said he felt his TV experience played a role in his hiring.

"We have an excellent broadcast studio here," he said. "I hope to use everything I learned at Merrill Lynch Television at the exchange."

Before entering PR, Yager was a longtime journalist at Fox Television, CBS News, and the AP, where he started in 1970.

He said he hoped to change recent criticism of the Amex's lack of brand recognition. In recent years, the exchange has developed a perception as an also-ran to the nation's two stock exchange behemoths, the NYSE and Nasdaq.
