NEW YORK: Cathy Renna, news media director and 14-year veteran of the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD), has stepped down from her post to join Fenton Communication as media relations director in the agency's New York office.
Renna cited focusing on issues other than just gay and lesbian ones as her primary reason for leaving GLAAD. She noted, however, that Fenton recruited her, in part, for her expertise in the area.
"I will always have one foot in the gay and lesbian community because it's where my heart is," said Renna.
Renna joined GLAAD as a volunteer in 1990, and slowly progressed through the ranks. As news media director, her main responsibility was maintaining dialogues with media outlets to represent the gay and lesbian community's stance on issues. During her tenure, she spoke on behalf of the community during such milestones as Ellen DeGeneres' coming out and Matthew Shepard's murder.
A recruiting process is underway to fill Renna's post.
