TOYBOX: P3150 is not equipped for everything

Anyone equipping a small or home office has to weigh which office equipment makes the most sense. Do you want a printer, a scanner, and a copier, or will one machine that does all three suit your needs?

Anyone equipping a small or home office has to weigh which office equipment makes the most sense. Do you want a printer, a scanner, and a copier, or will one machine that does all three suit your needs?

The Lexmark PrinTrio Photo P3150 is an all-in-one machine. It will save you space and expense you might otherwise devote to three pieces of equipment, but that savings comes at a price. I found the P3150 to be a slower printer for documents than my old one-purpose Epson. It also took quite a while for color photos. I set it up to do 10 pages of photos and went to bed after an hour, leaving my daughter in charge as it continued to print. Lexmark says the printer can turn out a 4" x 6" color photo in 60 seconds, but that wasn't my experience. The P3150 has some cool features. Digital-camera memory cards can be inserted directly into it to print photos. It will also print photos directly from the scanner bed, saving the step of scanning them to your hard drive first. Still, I'm not sure it convinced me an all-in-one machine is right for my home office. Any suggestions for gadgets we should try? Send them to toybox@prweek.comtoybox@prweek.com
